At least 300 million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, with the United States as the world’s top generator. Because plastic takes almost a century to decompose, it poses severe health and environmental threats. This repercussion led to the call for business operations to use sustainable materials to manufacture and pack their products.

Since about 91% of plastics are not recycled, some organizations took the initiative of repurposing plastic packaging and materials to decrease plastic waste in landfills. This resulted in using post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin and plastic as eco-friendly packaging alternatives to virgin plastic materials.

Importance of Post-consumer Recycled Resin

Post-consumer recycled resin is made from recycled plastics like water and beverage bottles and other plastic packaging and products. Typically, PCR resins are generated from plastic items that people use daily. Recycling firms buy plastic scrap and shred these materials to create fine granules that will be melted and reprocessed to develop post-consumer recycled materials.

PPP, LLC understands the critical role of PCRs in reducing the dangers of plastics in the environment. Due to this, we are committed to repurposing plastic waste by producing recycled materials and sending them back to the manufacturing supply chain in various industries. Moreover, we are PCR certified and a part of the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), guaranteeing that we put value on quality, recyclability, and sustainability.

Applications of Post-consumer Resin

Like virgin plastic materials, post-consumer resins are widely used in numerous industries because of their versatility and durability. Listed below are some common post-consumer resin packaging applications:

  • Bag manufacturing
  • Electronics
  • Food
  • General retail packaging
  • Irrigation systems
  • Pharmaceutical

Benefits of Post-consumer Resin

With post-consumer resin, manufacturers can produce quality packaging materials without contributing to the environmental degradation caused by plastic waste. In addition, PCR resins can incorporate multiple types of recycled materials and meet specifications in size, shape, color, finish, and performance.

Post-consumer resins also deliver the following benefits:

  • Decreases carbon footprint emission.
  • Limits negative environmental effects.
  • Reduces plastic waste contribution to landfills.
  • Lessens the need to generate new plastics from non-renewable materials.
  • Facilitates adherence to industry regulations.
  • Cuts operational costs.
  • Market zero-waste pledge to environmentally-conscious consumers.

PPP, LLC is PCR Certified and an APR Member

PPP, LLC being PCR certified guarantees customers that they are receiving recycled plastic resin in compliance with state and local regulations. To be PCR certified, a manufacturer must participate in a process involving quarterly reviews and an annual one that will either approve or deny PCR re-certification. PPP, LLC is proud to have been PCR certified year-after-year since it first received its PCR certification status.

In addition to being PCR certified, PPP, LLC is also a part of the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), which fosters the growth and vitality of the plastics recycling industry over the long term through leadership and management commitment. With APR, customers are guaranteed that PCR certified manufacturers are constantly up-to-date with the latest PCR news and industry innovations.

APR members comprise consumer product manufacturers, commercial and residential companies, and resin manufacturers. The organization helps them meet sustainability goals and prepare for upcoming industry regulation. This includes providing timely updates on regulatory developments that affect the industry, which can help members stay ahead of the curve and plan for future growth.

Being a part of APR is a vital asset for those in the recycled plastic industry given that it is a great source for anything and all PCR goings, whether legal or informative, such as new,  innovative manufacturing practices within the industry, as well as that it is a channel for different members in the industry to connect and share ideas.

Legal Compliances

PPP, LLC complies with all legal requirements, ensuring that its products are environmentally friendly and made of post-consumer recycled materials. It follows various California regulations to be PCR certified and plays a critical role in supplying PCR-certified resin to plastic product manufacturers in compliance with California Assembly Bill 478, Senate Bill 270, and Senate Bill 54.

Assembly Bill 478

Assembly Bill 478 mandates that thermoformed plastic containers sold and distributed within California should contain a minimum of 20% PCR. This is one of various California bills that not only aims to reduce plastic waste, but that also aims to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturers.

Senate Bill 270

This legislation requires a certain percentage of PCR to be used in plastic products sold in the state. By promoting PCR, the bill aims to reduce waste and encourage sustainability in producing plastic products.

Senate Bill 54

This bill aims to reduce plastic waste by requiring plastic manufacturers to meet a specific minimum recycled content requirement for plastic products sold in the state. The bill is a step towards reducing the plastic industry’s waste.

At PPP, LLC, we follow these legislations’ requirements to pass annual inspections and deliver sustainable developments to our patrons. Moreover, by being legally compliant, we can demonstrate our commitment to using PCR to help promote sustainable practices in the plastic industry.
